1098T Information


The 1098-T forms are now available on the Student Portal.

Students who do not choose electronic delivery will receive a paper statement mailed to their address on file in February, although they may also retrieve their 1098-T form through the student portal.

The Opt In for electronic delivery will remain in effect until the student withdraws their consent through the student portal or by visiting student services. The tax statements will remain available for three years


The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 (TRA97)

The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 may offer you the opportunity for tax savings through the following:

  • Hope Scholarship Tax Credit
  • Lifetime Learning Tax Credit

Please note that the Hope credit is actually a tax credit and not a scholarship. Tax credits and interest deductions are subtracted directly from the tax a family owes to the Internal Revenue Service and will NOT appear on your billing statement from the Davis Applied Technology College.

As permitted by the IRS, the College has chosen to populate the amount RECEIVED for qualified tuition and fees in Box 1 on the 1098-T as opposed to payments billed (Box 2). Please note that the College does not provide the optional Box 2 payment information and will not provide a modified form.

What is Form 1098-T

Form 1098-T is provided to help you determine if you are eligible to claim a Hope Scholarship or Lifetime Learning Credit on your income tax return. If you are claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return, they might be eligible to receive the credit(s).

How do I view or print my 1098-T online?

Your 1098-T form will be available online after January 31st. To access your 1098-T electronically, go to the DATC Student Portal on following website and follow the instructions below. Once you are logged in you will be able to download and print the form.To access your 1098-T report, follow these steps:

  1. Go to DATC Portal
  2. Click 'Log in'
  3. Enter the Username/Student ID of the student
  4. Enter the Password of the student. (If you don’t remember your Username/Student ID or password, please email 1098T@DATC.edu or call 801-593-2332).
  5. Select View/Print Reports
  6. Select 'Form1098T'
  7. Enter the student's Social Security Number, then click 'Generate' (NOTE: if the SSN Verification fails, please contact Student Services).
  8. Print or Save the 1098T Form
What if the 1098-T is not on my student portal report list?

There are several possibilities:

  1. The form may not be available yet - forms will be available by January 31st.
  2. Your tuition amounts consisted of only non-credit courses.
  3. Your tuition amounts were paid completely by scholarships/grants/financial aid.
  4. You do not have a valid SSN or Taxpayer ID on file with the Student Services Office.

If you do not have a form available on the student portal and you paid for eligible expenses, please email 1098T@DATC.edu or call 801-593-2332 and we will research your account and make corrections as necessary.

What do the amounts located on the form represent?

Box 1 represents the total amount of payments received for qualified tuition and fees.

Box 2 is not being used this year for reporting purposes.

Box 3 is blank because the Davis Applied Technology College has not changed its reporting method for 2014.

Box 4 represents any adjustments made for a prior year Form 1098-T. This may reduce any allowable education credit that you claimed for the prior year.

Box 5 represents the total of all scholarships or grants administered and processed by the eligible educational institution. The amount of scholarships or grants for the calendar year reduce the amount of any allowable tuition and fees deduction or the education credit you may claim for the year.

Box 6 represents adjustments to scholarships or grants for a prior year. This may affect the amount of any allowable tuition and fees deduction or education credit claimed for the prior year.

Box 7 will be checked if Box 1 includes amounts for an academic period beginning January-March 2015.

Box 8 is checked if you have been a student for scheduled for more than 12 hours (half time) for one academic period that began during the calendar year.

What are Qualified Expenses?

The IRS defines qualified higher education expenses as any tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for enrollment or attendance at an eligible educational institution that were paid from Jan 1 to December 31 of the tax year. The 1098T issued by the DATC only reports Tuition and Fees paid to the College.

What are Non-Qualified Expenses?

The Davis Applied Technology College counts as non-qualified expenses student activities, courses for which no academic credit is offered, and any miscellaneous service charges.

Who can claim a Hope or Lifetime Learning Tax Credit or the Higher Education Tuition & Fees Deduction?

An eligible taxpayer who incurred the cost of the qualified tuition payments may claim them. An eligible taxpayer may be the student or, if the student is a dependent for federal income tax purposes, the person (e.g., parent) claiming the student as a dependent. A student who is a dependent cannot claim the tax credits or deduction on his or her own tax return.

How do I claim a credit or deduction?

The College cannot advise students on the preparation of their tax return. Information for calculating a credit or deduction can be found in IRS Publication 970, which is available at www.irs.gov.

Where was my form mailed?

Davis Applied Technology College mailed the 1098-T forms based on the address provided by the students to the Student Services Office. Forms were mailed to permanent addresses if available. If you opted in for Electronic Delivery of 1098T you would not have received the 1098-T form in the mail.

Why didn't I receive a 1098-T in the mail for this tax year?

There are several possibilities:

  1. You selected Electronic Delivery on the Student Portal
  2. Your mailing address on file is incorrect.
  3. Your tuition amounts consisted of only non-credit courses.
  4. Your tuition amounts were paid completely by scholarships/grants/financial aid.
  5. You do not have a valid SSN or Taxpayer ID on file with the Student Services Office.
Can I get a form mailed to me?

Yes, the student must contact the Student Services Office to request it. Request by emailing 1098T@DATC.edu or by calling 801-593-2332.

What do I do if I did not get a 1098-T form?

If you do not have a form available on the student portal and you paid for eligible expenses please email 1098T@DATC.edu or by calling 801-593-2332 and we will research your account and make corrections as necessary.

If I receive Form 1098-T, does it mean I qualify for the Hope Scholarship or Lifetime Learning Tax Credits?

Not necessarily. The College is required to provide Form 1098-T to individuals who paid for qualified tuition and fees during the prior calendar year. Please consult with a qualified tax preparer or CPA to make an individual determination.

There are prior year adjustments on the form (Box 4 and 6) but these fields have not been populated on past forms. Why?

Beginning in tax year 2004, educational institutions must also report certain amounts to the IRS pertaining to prior year reductions to qualified tuition and related expenses as well as reductions to scholarship and/or grant amounts for a prior year.
